Security Tab

Security Tab

The Security Tab will allow you to specify security settings and permissions for PDF files being created.

If you want to protect your document so that only certain people can open or edit the PDF, you can encrypt the document.   You can encrypt the document with either the 40-bit encryption (which is Acrobat 3.x and higher compatible) or the 128-bit encryption (which is Acrobat 5.x or higher).   We recommend that you use the 128-bit encryption.   It makes your PDF document more secure.   The user password sets who can open the PDF.   They must know the password in order to open the PDF.   If the password is blank (nothing), anyone can open the document.   The master password controls who can edit, print without restriction, assemble, etc. the PDF document.   A blank password means that anyone can edit, print without restriction, etc. the PDF.

Someone who only knows the user password, but not the master password, is bound by the permissions set in the Encryption and Permission Options section.

NOTE: Encryption is not 100% secure (as no encryption truly is) and should not be regarded as such.   Use with caution.   CTdeveloping is not directly or indirectly liable for any damaged caused, loss sustained (because of loss of profit or any other reason) because of belief that this encryption would protect your PDF or the data / media it contains.

1 . Encryption Options Encryption Options

Encryption Options

Select the encryption type. By default this is set to No Encryption. Advanced 128-bit Encryption will provide you with more options, however, remember that no encryption is 100% secure and should not be used as such.

Standard 40-bit Encryption is compatible with Acrobat 3.x and higher.

Advanced 128-bit Encryption is compatible with Acrobat 5.x and higher.

2 . User Password User Password

User Password

Set the user password. The user password is the password required to open the document. This is the password which is actually used to encrypt the entire PDF. A blank password will allow anyone to open the PDF. The first and second entry for the user password must match.

3 . Master Password Master Password

Master Password

Set the master password. The master password is the password required to change the permission settings in a PDF. This password does NOT encrypt the entire file and often can be easily removed. The first and second entry for the master password must match.

4 . Encryption and Permission Options Encryption and Permission Options

Encryption and Permission Options

Both 128-bit and 40-bit encryptions have slightly different settings.

Setting the Printing to Fully Allow will allow a user to fully print the PDF.   The Allow Only Low Quality Printing option will limit users to a lower DPI printing, thus preventing them from just printing it to another PDF Printer Driver to remove the encryption, without sacrificing some loss of quality.   No Printing option prevents the user from printing entirely.   Only the Master would then be allowed to print the PDF.

Setting the Extraction to Allow Extraction of Text and Graphics will allow anyone to copy and paste images and text out of the PDF.   The Allow Only for Accessibility Programs will only allow programs marked as “accessibility programs” (programs that help blind or visually impaired users to read text on a computer) to extract the text and graphics from a PDF.

Setting the Allow Users to Edit the PDF will allow anyone to edit the PDF, if you uncheck it, only those with the master passwords will be able to edit it.

Setting the Allow Annotations will allow anyone to add an annotation (posted-notes and such) to a PDF, unchecking it will reserve this to those with a master password only.

Setting the Allow Users to Fill In Forms will allow anyone to fill out PDF form fields, unchecking it will only allow those with the master password to fill out the PDF form fields.

Setting the Allow Users to Assemble the PDF will allow anyone to assemble the PDF.   Unchecking it will reserve this to those with the master password.
